Veneers vs. crowns: what's the difference?

Both can give you a beautiful, natural-looking smile. Here's how they differ, and when each one is the better choice.

Veneers and crowns are both custom-made to improve how your teeth look. The biggest difference is how much of the tooth they cover, and whether the tooth mainly needs a cosmetic change or needs to be strengthened.

Veneers

A veneer is a thin shell bonded to the front surface of a tooth. Only a small amount of enamel is usually prepared, and some composite veneers need little or no preparation.

Veneers are a good choice for healthy teeth that you want to look better:

  • Discoloration that doesn't respond to whitening
  • Chipped or worn edges
  • Small gaps between teeth
  • Uneven shape or length, or mildly crooked teeth

Veneers can be made from porcelain (strong, stain-resistant and very natural-looking) or composite resin (often done in a single visit and easy to repair).

Crowns

A crown is a cap that covers the whole tooth, all the way around. The tooth is shaped more than for a veneer so the crown can fit over it.

Crowns are the better choice when a tooth needs protection and strength:

  • Large fillings or a lot of missing tooth structure
  • Cracked or broken teeth
  • Teeth that have had a root canal
  • Covering a dental implant or supporting a bridge

Modern crowns can be made from materials like zirconia and all-ceramic, which look natural and are very durable.

Which one is right for me?

If your tooth is healthy and your goal is a better-looking smile, a veneer is often the more conservative option. If the tooth is weak, heavily filled or broken, a crown protects it better. With good care and regular check-ups, both can last many years. Your dentist will examine your teeth and help you choose the option that fits your smile and your goals.

This guide is general information to help you prepare for your visit. It isn't a diagnosis. Your dentist will check your teeth and recommend what's right for you.
